Anyone been deep sea fishing in Mauritius?

I’m headed to Mauritius for a well deserved holiday in January. I can’t wait to go. On top of my to-do list is a deep sea charter fishing trip. This will be my first charter, and my first time deep sea fishing. I want to make the most of the experience, so I’d love to hear your stories. Anyone been fishing in Mauritius? What was it like? What did you catch? Any tips?

I’ve been fishing there, it’s a great place to go and you’r probably going to have a blast! Congrats on getting away for some fishing — most people think January’s a lousy time for a vacation, but we know better, eh? ;)

Anyway, although I was hoping for a marlin, I caught some skipjack tuna and a couple of dorado, plus a spearfish. The fish are big, there, too, so it’s pretty spectacular no matter what you catch. It was a great time, and the place is beautiful, too. Just going there and sailing around would probably make a great vacation. Throw in some fishing, and you’ll be in heaven. I can’t wait to go back myself, you’re making me jealous, lol.

You’re going right when blue and black marlin are in season, too, of course. The tunas and sharks are mostly year-round, though January isn’t the best time for hammerheads.

My #1 tip would be to not bother with trying to fish from the shore. It’s overfished and the locals get most of the stuff anyway. Go for the deep water fishing is my advice — you may not get a marlin, but you’ll get more action than shore fishing, that’s for sure.

Another good tip is that if there’s a heavy rainstorm, you should definitely try to get out. The mix of fresh water from the rain and salt water from the sea gets the baitfish to the surface. So if you go out when it’s just rained, or even while it’s raining if the weather allows it, you’re likely to catch stacks of tuna at a minimum with any halfway decent fishing setup.

Rain in Mauritius is an opportunity. If you get some, make the most of it.

I have a friend who went to Mauritius and found a random charter company when he visited one of the major towns. He said it was terrible: the boat was basically not sea-worthy, they didn’t have a life jacket for him, and he spent the entire trip fearing for his life. The equipment was old and he was terribly sea sick for the whole trip. So, just make sure you go with a reputable charter.

I would try finding someone online before you go, or possibly asking your resort to book a charter for you.

What an amazing opportunity! Catching a Blue marlin is on my bucket list, and I believe Mauritius is one of the best places to fish for these giants. I don’t really have any tips, but I would suggest finding a charter company that can do the whole experience for you: organize a day of fantastic fishing, with a beach BBQ on a pristine sandy white beach somewhere, and sundowners on your way back.

I’ve heard one of the best places to go is a couple of miles off Le Morne. The deep water currents attract small fish which are pursued by huge predators. You can catch marlin, sailfish, barracuda, wahoo, tuna and shark.

Fishing experience that is truly fascinating

Hi Bob. I have never gone for a deep sea fishing expedition in Mauritius. But so far whatever I have gatherred from my friends who went for it, the experiece is simply amazing. And these days the deep sea fishing charters that are available especially for these fishing expeditions ensure that the entire experiece is truly awesome and one-of-a-kind. Starting from the stay, to the facilities available, the expedition becomes a memorable one. So far I have not been fortunate enough to get a chance to go on such a trip. So why don’t you give me your feedback? If it’s motivating enough, I shall probably pack my bags and set for it right away.
