Anyone got any great book suggestions for fly fishermen?

Fly Fishing

My brother-in-law is just getting into fly fishing, and I’d love to buy him a book for his birthday. Does anyone have any suggestions for great books, probably aimed at the beginner fly-fisherman?

The title is a little weird, but I’d really like to recommend the “L.L. Bean Ultimate Book of Fly Fishing”, by Whitlock, Talleur, and Lord. There’s nothing about clothing in it (other than some practical advice with nothing to do with the clothing company), but there is a ton of useful stuff that should get your brother-in-law well launched into the world of fly fishing.

It’s a very detailed book and it should both get him started and give him some grist for his later, more advanced fly fishing adventures, too. Highly recommended.

I would say ‘The Curtis Creek Manifesto’, by Sheridan Anderson is THE book to buy.

There are many great books out there for novice anglers, but for getting to know all the basics, the Manifesto is one of the best.

It’s actually written in comic-book style, with lots of images and a witty tone.

The book covers the basics of trout behavior, insects, necessary gear and fly-fishing technique. Because it’s a comic book it’s incredibly easy to read and not intimidating at all.
