Best weight line for bluefin

Asked by: 1041 views Tuna

I’m going out this June, off southern California to try for some bluefin tuna.  I’ve been told that a 30 pound line is sufficient, but was wondering if this would hold if a really big one took the bait, say one that was over 100 pounds.  I know these guys are fighters and don’t want to have the line snap unexpectedly while fighting it in, but don’t want to ‘overkill’ either.

I was also wondering if artificial bait would work or do I need live bait for bluefin.  I’ve got a pretty good collection of bait already, so I’ll use that if I can.

I believe that the line you should be using for Bluefin tuna would be a 130 to 200 pound test line.
