Tiger fishing in South Africa?

We’re headed to South Africa for a safari in October and I was hoping to get some fishing in while I’m there.

I have always wanted to go Tiger fishing – I believe Tigers are fantastic to fish for and put up quite a fight.

I know Tiger fishing is fantastic in Lake Kariba in Zambia and Zimbabwe. But I’ve never heard of Tiger fishing in South Africa. I have some extra time built into our itinerary; so if possible, I’d love to add it to our trip.

Has anyone heard of tiger fishing in South Africa?

Howdy, The Pro! Yes, there is definitely tiger fishing in South Africa. Lake Jozini, which is formed by Jozini Dam, is the only spot that I know of, though, so I’m not sure if you’ll be in the area. You’ll have better luck going out on a boat after them rather than fishing from shore, though I think it’s possible to get a fish from shore occasionally.

Look for drop-offs, reed beds, and weed beds especially, I think. There are some decent charters for Lake Jozini tiger fishing that I’m sure can help you out, too.

Lake Jozini in Kwa-Zulu Natal is the only place in South Africa where you’ll find Tiger fish.

There’s an amazing houseboat on the dam which you can stay on. Or you can go the ‘do it yourself’ route and bring a boat.

It is an amazing fishing experience, but the only downside is that Jozini is a much smaller dam than Kariba and the Tigers are generally a bit smaller than the big ones you’ll catch north of the border.

Tiger fishing is South Africa is great. The Jozini Reservoir is one of the best spots to hunt these predator fish. Tigers up to about 30 pounds have been hauled out of Jozini. Another good place is the Zambezi River. The Pongola Dam reservoir is also a good place, and many fishermen prefer this because the chance of picking up malaria is lower here than at other spots. Oliphants River is another good spot for catching these fish.

The Jonzini Dam reservoir is one of the best spots to catch tiger fish in South Africa. They’re found in most of the major rivers in the country. The Zambezi River has plenty of tigers, averaging 9 kg, the same as those found in the Jonzini, although tigers up to 15 kg have been pulled out of Jonzini. A lot of fishermen also like going for tigers in Pongola Dam reservoir since the chance of getting bitten by a malarial mosquito is less than at most other places.
