California Fishing Charters

Fishing in California has a well deserved reputation for being some of the most satisfying in the country. Here there are waters rich with river and ocean salmon, trout, steelhead, catfish and halibut and there are fishing spots galore, no matter what kind of catch you’re looking for. In fact, California has a square mile of water for every 20 square miles of land, as well as an 840-mile long coastline, so those looking for a choice of fishing sites will find plenty here. After two wet years, California’s lakes are healthy and full and, despite low stocks in years gone by, the ocean based salmon population is beginning to thrive once again. There has also been a concerted effort to plant trout, all of which has resulted in some of the best fishing territory in America – as well as some of the most stunning scenery in which to do it!

San Francisco Bay is ripe and ready for keen anglers with a number of enormously popular spots, such as Alameda Rock Wall and Chrissy Field. Then of course there is Alcatraz, where these days you’re only likely to pull up a salmon or striper, rather than an escaping prisoner, but 50 years ago it might have been a different matter…From May through to October there is salmon, halibut, rock cod and lingcod to fish here, with the tuna season from August to October. There is also a wonderful abundance of wildlife to keep you entertained whilst you’re waiting for a bite, such as the sea lions and elephant seals and the odd – and exciting - sighting of a great white shark.

Off the coast of San Diego, the waters are teeming with sardines, which are often the bait of choice for anglers in this area looking to hook tuna, Dorado, yellowtail and even a shark. Further out around the Channel Islands, there are opportunities to pursue halibut, white sea bass, calico bass and yellowtail in an area that is known for its considerable natural beauty. Giant yellowtail and white sea bass are often caught travelling together in this part of the world and are exciting to fish, as they can weigh in excess of 40 pounds. The method of fishing is pretty thrilling too – right up close to the shoreline with squid attached to the end of the line.

Thanks to the freshwater runoff, there is some exciting sturgeon activity at Suisun Bay around the end of the winter months and the Mothball Fleet is another recognised hot spot for this type of fish. If you’re looking for largemouth bass then in 2003 a 21.11-pound monster was pulled out of Lake Dixon – many of those in the know believe that there is bigger yet to be found below the lake’s rippling surface so get fishing if you want to be the one to snare it! Lake Shasta in the Sacramento Valley and Lake Oroville are also good bass spots, with the latter providing plenty in terms of numbers.

California fishing charters can be booked to any of these locations, to cater for a broad range of party sizes and fishing requirements. They are a great way to spend a few hours in good company enjoying the glorious California sun.
