Fishing in Florida

From Pensacola to the Keys, superb coastal fishing trips are within an easy 90-minute drive from anywhere in Florida. Moreover, saltwater fishing in the Sunshine State is addictive. Once you’ve hooked up to a big grouper or a gator trout and felt the power of the fight they give you, you’ll be ready to swear off fresh water fishing. The beauty of saltwater fishing in Florida is the broad array of species inshore and offshore and its all year availability.

If you prefer a one-on-one experience, guides are available at almost every port of call in the state. While some guides target only one or two species such as snook, redfish, speckled trout or bonefish, others focus on a specific type of fishing, such as inshore, offshore, or flyfishing.

With us, you can focus on planning all the exciting fishing adventures your family will have. If you have a large family or want to take along a group of friends, try a party boat for a half-day or a day-long fishing trip. Many party boats offer half-day, full-day, 12-hour and overnight trips, as well as private fishing charters and specialty trips. Others provide four-hour fishing trips, as well as corporate fishing charters and nighttime fishing.

Want to get away from it all? Visit one of the state’s premier resorts in the Keys or almost anywhere along the coast. At these resorts you can enjoy gourmet dining, take a bicycle tour, or visit some of the state’s historic sites in between the days you’re fishing.

Three species for which Florida is well known are snook, redfish and speckled trout. If you’re coming for snook, plan to come in the spring. When snook are getting ready to spawn, they’ll bite down on anything you throw at them. Most of the time the Tampa Bay area on the west coast to the Cape Canaveral area on the east coast is about as far north as snook are found. However, if the state has had a few warm winters, snook may move farther north than usual.

For redfish, visit in mid summer. By then the reds are in big schools, moving up onto the grass flats and sandbars and feeding there. They’re mostly in shallow water so they’re easy to identify; they’re feeding and either have already spawned or are getting ready to spawn. Most of the fish in schools will be average sized redfish, but the head of the school may contain a few big bull reds.

The west central Florida coast is the best place for speckled trout. Throughout that Big Bend region there’s a lot of seagrass and shallow water, both of which are magnets for speckled trout in the summer. Because those conditions prevail over so much of the Big Bend area, anglers can go offshore and have many of the same fishing conditions they usually find in bays.

Regardless of where you are in Florida, outstanding coastal fishing is almost at your doorstep. It’s as easy as deciding you want to go fishing.
