The city of Destin, Florida is located on the Florida Panhandle in Okaloosa County. It is on the Emerald Coast of Florida, a 100 mile stretch along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico well known for its lovely emerald green waters.
Destin is between the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. East Pass is the outlet from Choctawhatchee Bay into the Gulf of Mexico. Destin Harbor is located just north of the East Pass jetty. Destin boasts sparkling white beaches and multi-species, multi-seasonal fishing, attracting more than 4.5 million annual visitors to the area.

Destin is named after Captain Leonard Destin, a New London, Connecticut sea captain who came to settle in the area in 1845. The town grew from a small fishing village to an incorporated city in 1984, with rapid growth and condominium development since the 1970's. It has, however, maintained its deep connection to fishing and well deserves its nickname given to it by actor Bob Hope as The World's Luckiest Fishing Village. It has the largest number of fishing charters in the state and the largest sport fishing fleet in the country, allowing fishing trips for every level of interest and expertise to be easily arranged.

Destin is blessed with an ideal location, making all sorts of fishing possible in many seasons. Pole fishing, spear fishing, fresh water fishing and ocean fishing are all popular activities in this friendly town that loves fishing and maintains a vigorous fishing economy. Its natural and artificial reefs provide a wonderful habitat for reef fish. It holds a month long fishing tournament in October called the Destin Fishing Rodeo where fishermen compete to catch the largest fish in many categories, cheered on by enthusiastic spectators.

The simplest type of fishing in Destin is off a pier, beach or jetty with no need for a boat. Catches include Pompano, Redfish, Whiting, Channel Bass, Sheepshead, Bluefish, Blue Runner, Sail Cat, King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Jack Crevalle and Bonito. The best months in the Gulf are between April, to catch the arrival of the Pompano, through the end of October.

Inshore trolling is from March through November. It all starts with the much anticipated run of the Cobia or Ling during the spring migration. The best method for catching Cobia is by sight casting from the boat. Local charter boats schedule inshore trolling trips for full or half day and customers can expect catches of such fish as Cobia, Schoolie Dolphin, Bonito, Spanish Mackerel and King Mackerel.

Offshore trolling is in deeper waters about 27 miles southwest of the city. The most productive months for catching fish like White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Dolphin, Wahoo and Sailfish are August through October. Destin charters are well known for their highly successful billfish catches. These are the big fish along and the excitement of the big catch.

Deep sea bottom fishing is one of Destin's charter specialities. Bottom fishing is fine year round and the fishing includes Snapper, Cobia, Grouper, Amber jack, Scamp, and Trigger fish.
